As I sit down to write this, I’m feeling every bit of my 46 years…and maybe a few extra.
Over the last several weeks, I’ve found myself using the same excuses I hear from so many people.
“I’ve been busy.”
“I’ve been working in the yard.”
“I’ve been getting plenty of physical labor.”
The reality?
None of those things replace intentional exercise.
I’ve realized more than ever that I can’t rely on what I did yesterday to prepare me for tomorrow.
I have to invest in today.
Every day.
Because the reason I train isn’t simply to work out.
I train so I can keep saying “yes” to the adventures waiting outside the gym walls.
That’s why I founded Performance Ranch.
It was never about building a gym.
It was about helping people build lives.
Years ago, I watched people chase heavier weights, faster times, and bigger numbers. There is certainly a place for performance goals, but too often I saw those pursuits come at the expense of movement quality, longevity, and health.
I wanted something different.
I wanted to build a place where the gym became a tool—not the destination.
Our goal has always been simple:
Help people become physically capable of doing the things they love outside these four walls.
Whether that’s hiking with your family…
Mountain biking on your favorite trail…
Traveling the world…
Or simply getting up off the floor to play with your grandkids.
The gym should enhance your life.
Not become your life.
Habits Create the Lifestyle
Over the years, I’ve watched hundreds of people completely transform their lives.
Not because they found the perfect workout.
Not because they found the perfect diet.
Because they changed their daily habits.
Real change doesn’t happen from one great workout.
It happens because healthy choices become part of your identity.
Small actions.
Repeated consistently.
That’s where lasting change lives.
My Own Habit Reset
The last few months have reminded me that coaches aren’t immune to getting off track.
Recovering from my back injury required a tremendous amount of focus.
As my body healed, some of the habits that helped me recover slowly started slipping away.
Ironically, the very things that got me healthy were the things I began doing less consistently.
Sound familiar?
I understand now, more than ever, what so many of our members experience.
Pain changes you.
Recovery changes your routine.
Life gets busy.
Before you know it, you’re surviving instead of intentionally living.
The good news?
There is another side.
I’ve experienced both the pain of injury and the joy of recovery.
And I can’t forget the tools that helped me get there.
The Seven Habits That Changed Everything
These became my foundation.
1. Prioritize sleep.
Recovery starts long before the workout.
2. Thermal therapy.
Hot five times each week.
Cold five times each week.
3. Daily movement.
Mobility.
Activation.
Breathing.
Every day.
4. Strength training.
Strength is still king.
5. Nutrition first.
Protein.
Fiber.
Healthy fats.
Fuel the body before asking it to perform.
6. Listen to my body.
Rest isn’t weakness.
Sometimes it’s exactly what you need.
7. Honor the Sabbath.
One day each week to slow down, worship, reflect, and recharge.
These seven habits gave me my life back.
They allowed me to ride my bike again.
Build projects around my home.
Reduce my back pain.
Feel strong again.
As life gets busy, these habits can’t disappear.
They have to remain my foundation.
Build a System, Not Just a Goal
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned about behavior change is this:
Don’t just create a goal.
Create a system.
For me, sleep has always been a challenge.
So instead of saying, “I need to sleep more,” I built a routine around it.
If I’m in bed by 10:30, I’m much more likely to wake naturally between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m.
That leads into my morning routine:
Hot tub.
Breathing.
Mobility.
Cold plunge.
Three minutes of focused nasal breathing.
Five minutes of bodyweight and kettlebell strength work.
Protein smoothie with fruit and fiber.
Then I begin my workday at my standing desk, which allows me to keep moving instead of sitting for hours.
Notice something?
Each habit naturally leads to the next.
That’s a system.
And systems are much easier to maintain than relying on motivation.
Get Back on Track
The system already exists.
I simply need to recommit to following it.
I know what it feels like to get off track.
Fortunately, I also have great people in my corner who help hold me accountable and remind me of what matters most.
We all need that.
No one succeeds alone.
