Live Life Beyond the Gym Walls

Behavior Change – Discover Your “Why”

Altis Speed Summit 2026

What the Altis Speed Summit Taught Me

This last weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the Altis Speed Summit in San Diego.

To say it was impressive would be an understatement.

For three days, I immersed myself in conversations with some of the brightest minds in coaching, sports performance, movement, and athlete development. The presentations were outstanding, but what impacted me most were the conversations between sessions, over meals, and in the hallways.

The connections.

The questions.

The willingness to challenge conventional thinking.

The summit didn’t give me all the answers.

It gave me better questions.

And I’ve learned that better questions often lead to better outcomes.

I left energized, inspired, and excited about the future. Not because I learned a new exercise or training method, but because I gained a deeper understanding of how much there is still to learn.

That’s one of the things I love most about coaching.

Education is limitless.

The moment we think we’ve figured it all out is the moment we stop growing.

Because of my experience at Altis, I’ve committed to investing in more of their educational opportunities. I want to continue expanding my coaching toolbox, challenging my assumptions, and bringing the best possible information back to our staff, our members, and eventually our community.

As I reflected on the summit during my flight home, one question kept coming back to me:

Why do some people create lasting change while others struggle to maintain momentum?

That question led me down a path of reflection on the thousands of conversations I’ve had with clients over the last 23 years.

What 23 Years of Coaching Has Taught Me

Over the last 23 years, I’ve sat down with thousands of people.

I can still remember those first awkward conversations trying to establish goals, timelines, schedules, and nutrition plans. Looking back, I’ve learned one major lesson:

People often have a picture in their mind of how they want the story to end.

Lose the weight.

Run the race.

Get stronger.

Feel better.

But getting there isn’t a simple plug-and-play process.

You can’t just turn one dial up and another dial down and expect the same result for everyone.

Human beings are more complicated than that.

We all have different experiences, different challenges, different bodies, and different reasons for wanting to change.

The Most Important Question We Can Ask

Which has led me to a question I need to ask more often:

Why does this matter to you?

Because if it matters enough, people will make the changes necessary to live a healthier, stronger, and more fulfilling life.

When you truly understand why you’re doing something, you do it with more purpose, more consistency, and often more enjoyment.

You begin to believe the effort is worth it.

You buy into the process.

And when we understand someone’s “why,” we gain a better understanding of the world they live in and the obstacles they’re trying to overcome.

That’s where real coaching begins.

Why Some People Transform, and Others Don’t

Over the years, our programs have helped people achieve incredible things.

I’ve watched clients go from hating every step of a one-mile run to crossing the finish line of a HYROX competition.

I’ve seen clients who struggled to walk without knee pain climb Mount Kilimanjaro in their 60s.

I’ve also worked with clients through the process of winning multiple world championships.

Those transformations didn’t happen because of a perfect workout program.

They happened because those individuals changed their identity.

They stopped seeing themselves as someone who “couldn’t” and started believing they were someone who could.

At the same time, I’ve also seen people start with tremendous enthusiasm only to quit before they ever gained momentum.

That has forced me to ask another question:

Why do some people thrive while others struggle?

Better Questions Lead to Better Results

The answer isn’t always exercise.

Sometimes it’s support.

Sometimes it’s confidence.

Sometimes it’s clarity.

And sometimes it’s simply that we haven’t asked the right questions yet.

That realization has challenged me to continuously audit our programs, our systems, and our coaching process.

We need to ask better questions.

We need to listen more carefully.

And we need to understand what truly matters to the people we serve.

Because when we do, we can help them create a life they actually want to live.

A life filled with adventure.

A life filled with exploration.

A life where they’re physically capable of doing the things that bring them joy.

Learning Never Stops

One of the biggest lessons from the Altis Speed Summit wasn’t about speed development or performance testing.

It was humility.

Being in a room full of world-class coaches reminded me that there is always another level of learning available if we’re willing to pursue it.

The best coaches aren’t the ones who think they have all the answers.

They’re the ones who remain curious enough to keep asking questions.

That’s the culture we’re building at Performance Ranch.

We want our coaches to be lifelong students because our members deserve coaches who are constantly improving.

Every conference, every book, every certification, every conversation with another coach helps us sharpen our ability to serve others.

Our commitment to education isn’t about collecting credentials.

It’s about helping more people achieve meaningful and lasting results.

Lessons From Our Legend Clients

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned has come from our Legend clients—those in their 70s and beyond.

They’ve shown me that a fulfilling life isn’t complicated.

Exercise regularly.

Eat well.

Spend time with friends.

Get outside.

Be comfortable being alone with your own thoughts.

Stay curious.

Keep learning.

Those who do these things consistently seem to enjoy life at a different level.

They truly embody what it means to live life beyond the gym walls.

Health and Happiness Are Connected

I’ve come to believe that health and happiness are deeply connected.

Our job isn’t simply to help people lose weight or gain muscle.

Our job is to help people build a sustainable life where they can perform at their best.

And sustainable doesn’t mean exhausted.

It doesn’t mean crushing yourself in a workout so badly that you can’t sit down comfortably the next day.

That’s not performance.

That’s punishment.

What Optimal Performance Really Means

For us, optimal means feeling good in your own body.

It means moving well.

Feeling strong.

Thinking clearly.

Sleeping well.

Recovering well.

Fueling your body appropriately.

Being grateful for the gifts God has given you while continuing to improve the fortress you’ve been entrusted with.

Because your body is your fortress.

And it deserves to be trained, nourished, and cared for accordingly.

Build a Stronger Foundation

If you’d like to learn how to strengthen your fortress and prepare your body for all the adventures ahead, we’d love to help.
